Triathlon WA has two junior programs designed to meet the needs of all junior age athletes. There are several differences between the two programs but the major difference is in the level of competitiveness. The ITU Junior State Series is very competitive and the State Junior Series is less competitive but still allows participants to test themselves. ITU stands for International Triathlon Union the governing body that sanctions Olympic style triathlon racing worldwide.
State Junior Series
The State Junior Series has three age categories determine as you age on 31 December 2013. These age categories are 12-13, 13-14 and 16-19 for both men and women. Once an athlete is older than 20 they then compete as an Age Group athlete in the 20-24 age group.
ITU Junior State Series
This is a more competitive race series for those athletes who wish to race draft legal races (Olympic style racing) and possibly race in Triathlon Australia’s national junior series races. Athletes in this race series have their age calculated as of 31 December 2014. This date conforms to the rest of the world and qualifies our athlete if successful performance wise to race in national and international ITU events. Other differences from the State Junior Series are;
- Athletes race in only two age categories; Youth 13-15yrs and Junior 16-19yrs
- Races uses ITU race rules
- Athletes are required to have an ITU bike endorsement

Triathlete Of The Year (TOTY) Points
Athletes can only collect points in either the State Junior Race Series or the ITU Junior Race Series but not both. Once an athlete has raced in two races in either of the State Junior Series or ITU Race Series they will be kept in that category for TOTY Points based on which race series they reach the threshold of two races. For example if they race in two ITU Races prior to their second race in the State Series Race then they will slotted into the ITU Race Series for TOTY Points calculation.
Racing Above Your Age
Any individual wishing to race above their age group distance must abide by the following TA procedures:
- Permission in writing from the TA designated Sports Doctor ( contact TWA) – seperate permission required for each race. (Please provide a copy to the Race Director and TWA). Click here for a copy of the consent application form. The process for applying to race up an age group can take some months, so if you are aware of an event you would like to compete in, please ensure you apply early.
