The first triathlon in Albany was held on the 1st June 1986 and the Albany Triathlon Club was officially form
ed by 1988 as it took some time to get Incorporated! The start up of the club was led by a group of people who were already involved in the local swim, cycle and athletics clubs. The Olympic Distance that started in 1986 has continued to this day and is now held on the March long weekend.
Today the club has events almost every week starting in October and ending in April/May 
with distances varying from week to week with the biggest distance being the Olympic. The club is privileged to have great support from its community. We have 13 sponsored events, including the ever popular TWA State Series race, the Laminex Group Albany Classic which has grown to over 250 entrants and is the oldest event on the state calendar. The event has also attracted some of the state and Australia’s top triathletes including Brad Bevan, Greg Welch, Sean O’Neil and Angela Milne.
The club calendar events cover aquathons, duathlons and triathlons with 8 of these event

handicapped. To top it off, we are fortunate enough to be able to rotate around 8 breathtaking locations in and around Albany which we are looking to add to in the future!
All levels of fitness are catered for with every long course having a short course equivalent. We’ve even started a short course championship this season with all distances shorter than a sprint.
The club prides itself on its social aspect where we organise most of our training around where
we will end up for coffee or after hour drinks! Sure there are some of us who train hard and are quite good… the rest of us fall over and gasp at the finish line in agony, then five minutes later in a fit of misguided adrenaline, decide to do it all again next week!
The club’s focus going forward is to increase membership while looking to add a few different features to the calendar for future years such as an off road triathlon. We happily welcome new members, no matter what their fitness level, to come and have a go because we know that once you do, you’d be hooked just like the rest of us!
