Becoming an Official
Technical Officials Pathway
Level 1
Basic entry level official. Attend TO course and attend event for practical position under supervision of other officials.Once accredited the level 1 will assist as a team member at all level of events to National Series.
Duties include
- Transition check in and flow control.

- Drafting control as Pillion on motorcycle.
- Various duties as directed by Senior Official in charge.
Level 2
After a period of service (usually 2 years) as an active level 1 an official can then request to be considered for elevation to Level 2
In addition to level 1 duties a level 2 is expected to:
- Run a level 1 TO course under supervision of an assessor.
- Take the Role of RR or TD or CTO at State Events
- Assist at state based National events under supervision Of STT
- Mentor new officials
- A period of time as a member of the State Technical committee can normally be expected
After a time as an active L2 and under a recommendation from the TWA STTA and TWATC an official can be nominated to the Triathlon Australia TC panel and Director Of Officials for promotion. The Level 3 status is the highest State Event level. Duties include
- State based assessor under NOAS guidelines
- Supervising Level 2 accreditation.
- Acting as Race Referree or Technical Director and Chief Technical Official ( STT) at major national events.
- Assist in development the Technical program at State and feedback discussions at National level.
NTO National Technical Official
This as an invitation by consent level of official.
Each state can nominate the level 3 officials for consideration. However the elevation to NTO is based on ability of an official in leadership and experience in the Field of play. The Director of Officials makes a recommendation to the TATC for acceptance of promotion to NTO level.
In WA we have 3 active NTO. Their Duties are similar to those of L3 but usually as STT at Major events.
ITU ITO. International Technical Official
These officials officiate at International ITU events in Australia and internationally.
Purely invitation based on experience as level 3 or NTO.
TA nomination to be presented to ITU for training.
WA has 2 recognised ITO with 3 others being assessed, in the ITU program.

Technical Development Program
The aim of the Technical Development Program is to provide opportunities for Technical Officials to gain and provide the best officiating standards for an event ensuring that all aspects of the triathlon are of a high quality, with particular emphasis on the safety and fairness for each competitor.
